Shilpa V. Patel, PhD, JD, directs the procurement and development of intellectual property. Dr. Patel earned her PhD in Pharmacology at Yale University by studying the stress response to enhance ovarian cancer cell kill with the administration of less toxic chemotherapy doses. During this time, she was an editor for Yale Law School’s Journal of Law & Technology and also designed, managed, and conducted patent-focused projects for Yale startup biotechnology companies. Dr. Patel earned her JD from Fordham Law School.

Dr. Patel has extensive experience with the protection of intellectual property, for example, from patent procurement through litigation. As outside counsel, she has drafted and prosecuted United States and foreign (approximately 70 countries) patent applications in many biotechnology and pharmaceutical technologies, conducted freedom-to-operate (FTO) patent due diligence, patentability assessments, inventorship analyses, and client portfolio counseling. Additionally, Dr. Patel has served as in-house counsel handling complex Hatch Waxman counseling and litigation, and all stages of securing U.S. trademark protection. Additionally, she assisted company scientists with formulation strategies; conducted FTO analyses and API/process clearances; developed pre-litigation and litigation strategies for generic targets, pipeline products and specialty branded products; and assisted in the preparation and negotiation of internal and external contracts, assignments, development/collaboration agreements, and licenses.

Dr. Patel is a licensed attorney in the States of New York and New Jersey and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
